LOVE that. And that soft whuffle as they trade breath with you, taking you in and then sighing back out onto your skin.... such a peaceful feeling. Homecoming, indeed.

Hedra - LOVE the pics of Mr. B and his four-legged loves. Nice little form developing on him as a rider. It lights me up, watching him (obviously) - and partly because he is a total addict (granted, he was horse mad from the first time he saw one, and I don't think he was a year old yet). It's also kind of fun to see him up on Bucky, who would be a fair size for me to ride...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6589783647802842771.post-74665883397624194662009-09-05T13:45:42.696-07:002009-09-05T13:45:42.696-07:00You made my screen all blurry with this story

I don't think I remember Cappy specifica...Sigh. I don't think I remember Cappy specifically, though I do recall some large horse with freckles and a major lip flop. And Happy, of course.

Mr B has a school pony who loves him, one of his first - Little Bandit, who reminds me of that pony colt at the barn, the gray with the very cresty attitude before being cut, and kind of a flat attitude after - only Bandit has the 'before' attitude. Kind of a snot, a bit stubborn and full of himself, but when he'd see Mr B coming, he'd lift his head and point his ears toward him and take a good snuffle. Not quite the the whicker of greeting, but a definite 'I see you, I know you, I like you' reaction. Which, given that at the time Mr B was 4-5 years old, and not all that much of a rider yet... not bad. Bandit wasn't a bad school horse for others, just kind of blah for some riders, and paying attention for others.

Speaking of which, I totally forgot to tell you that Mr B got his first whicker of greeting from a horse a couple weeks back. Cutie is his new assigned ride. She actually reminds me a little of Happy Face - Anglo-Arab bay, that same kind of tidy feel to her, a bit on the smaller side but not a pony. Only, she's not so much on the honest as default - Honest if you make her, though. And Mr B made her. She tried to wander off the rail on their first go round, and he hauled her around (turning her, she ignored, he ended up having to pull her head flat sideways before she did more than just keep going where she felt like), turned her around, got her settled back at the rail, picked up her trot again, and sent her around the ring. Lovely lovely to see. He also is now untacking and grooming, and was careful and kind to her as he brushed her down, noticing when she seemed to like having her rather dusty legs brushed with the soft brush. They turned her out while I chatted with another mom for a moment, and as we left the barn enclosure, she lifted her head, whickered to Mr B, and left her lunch to come to the fence for him. After the first ride, that's pretty darn cool. (He didn't realize at first that she was 'talking to him'.)

Ah, yeah. This is why I am so glad he's riding. Aside from it being the best possible PT for his hands and hip joints...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6589783647802842771.post-75749851598262256002009-09-04T06:54:54.122-07:002009-09-04T06:54:54.122-07:00These last two posts... yes.

I am reminded of a lesson horse...Aww, how amazing. I am reminded of a lesson horse I dearly loved, but who I could not afford to own. Sarah was old when I first rode her (30+ if I remember right) and a cranky old girl. The only grey horse in a stable full of chestnuts and bays, she'd been picked on to the point where she could not be safely left near other horses, as she had a "bite first" attitude.
My mother tells of me walking to a roundpen where she was teaching a college girl how to ride, and Sarah was going with her ears back and her eyes narrow, stomping her way around the ring. When I took the reins after the lesson was over, Sarah crested her neck, tucked her nose and sashayed her way up to the jumping arena for my lesson. Sarah was about as smooth to ride as a 2x4 on pogostick, but for me she was an honest horse. What I remember most was how she was stall sour for anyone else, but if I called her name, she'd pull her head out of the corner and come stick her head in the halter. She foundered at 34, and was retired to pasture. I still miss her. (And I know "retired to pasture" wasn't a euphemism for euthanasia, as other horses retired would sometimes "fail" at retiring and be brought back for treatment, and we were told when one of the ponies colicked and died.)

I've had a couple other horses who obviously preferred me to their owners. My friends were beginning adult riders. I spent a lot of time training their horses to handle the flopping, fumbling and fussing, then would ride quietly and stay out of their way.

Eventually, I'd like to own my own horse, but I hope I find a heart string horse again, because Sarah has left some pretty impressive hoofprints on my heart.

Thank you for sharing these stories.Flohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02985619413600423292noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6589783647802842771.post-35596668633338027122009-09-03T18:09:33.096-07:002009-09-03T18:09:33.096-07:00Good for the retiree and good for Cappy! Patty Cakes needed her own little person to have and to snuffle.

I remember a conversation we had earlier this summer about ownership. Cyndi has had horse for a very long time, and we have been friends for a very long time. We agree that all horses do better when they are owned and loved by a person rather than "just one of the horses" in a string.Hollyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17685436243608973979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6589783647802842771.post-76607010752554451272009-09-03T17:57:04.861-07:002009-09-03T17:57:04.861-07:00I'm loving your trip down memory lane!I'm loving your trip down memory lane!Today Wendyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03583682201977382593noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6589783647802842771.post-83783397308951454632009-09-03T15:11:45.017-07:002009-09-03T15:11:45.017-07:00Oh, I had a horse like that. I laughed hard at the story of Georgie- I've been on that same horse, same reaction, same sad excuse for a crop.
